Help with Pictures

I am attempting to add pictures to a database for use in Director and I have
to plead complete ignorance. I have a few questions -

* I have about 1100 JPGs that need to be put into the db. Should I use BLOB
or Picture? The files sizes of the original JPGs vary from 76K to 1.3MB and
I hope to use JPEG compression in the db.

* Given the varied size of these pictures, what would be the best segment
size to use? Could someone explain exactly what the segment size setting is?

* Is there a way to import these pictures into the database other than
writing a LIngo routine?

* The total size of all the pictures is around 580MB. Would it be better to
have one large db for the pictures or split it up into a few smaller db
files? How much problem is there with a 580MB database file?
