My limited experience with triggers has been with SQL Server. It is my
understanding, and I could be completely wrong here, that I could use a
trigger to update the value for a specific field whenever the record was
modified.

This would be fantastic. :-) But I know that it would be quite a task.

So a timestamp field would automatically update each time the record was
modified? That could be very helpful.
I'm assuming it would be OS time. This can make things a little
difficult with timezones. If you could make it strictly Greenwich Mean
Time(GMT)-0 based, that could help a lot.
