It's a common thing. You have to make own decision which approach
suits you needs. Most common and safe is using SQL approach. But
sometime you may need some extra performance or something which can not be
efficiently done with SQL. In thins case you can choose API way.
Also you can mix both ways.

We have! Look into examples which are deployed with V4REV. There is
something about 50 examples (searches too).

Mainly - bug fixes. We are trying to be as fast-responsive as
possible.
