Well I seem to have fixed my own problem. If I use

get valentina_shutdown() instead of the way the tutorial tells me, it  
seems to work now.

BTW, if I may suggest, do not use smart quoting in your documentation  
please. It's nice to be able to copy and paste code snippets, but if  
you use smart quotes I will, of course, get compile errors until I  
replace them.
