I think you're missing a big factor here. Director's HTML support is pretty
bad and does not extend to images. The only option is really to use a web
browser Xtra like WebXtra to render the HTML properly:

Unfortunately it's effectively Windows only - hopefully they will wrap
WebCore to produce a Mac version at some point.

You could try using pointochar to find the location of links in the text and
attempt to align sprites over them, but remember that Director will not make
space for the images to fit.
