The five connections in VDN are royalty free, "base" connections. Any
server app that uses the embedded server component will automatically be
initialized to allow five simultaneous connections.
You can add additional connections to any installation. VDN members can
purchase connections in bulk, then parcel them out to your users on a
per deployment basis. Say one client needs six simultaneous connections,
another ten, another nine. You'd need to give/sell to these customers 1,
5 and 4 additional connections.
VDN members will get what I liken to a pez dispenser for connections.
You can fill it up, then ration them out to your customers.
There may be a certain point though (or from the very beginning) that
you might want your solution to use a single server to serve up all of
your database solutions. That's when you might want to sell your
customer one of the standalone server products, so that the single
server can serve up all solutions (only limited by the number of
connections you purchase -- there will be an "unlimited" server as
well).
For the most part, almost any small to medium sized business is going to
be fine with five connections. These arent named seats, by the way, so a
large number of users can use a base embedded server fine unless they
are set up to exclusively hog those connections.
If you think you are going to need more "base" connections, you should
contact me directly about it.
