Server DB backup

Hi list!

I wonder how to do a database backup from a server database. I know I can do
an XML dump, but this would not be encrypted or safe. So actually I want to
copy the DB files. But I can't because they are in use (of course, the
server service has them open!).

Any ideas how to do that. I can not stop the service from my application...
