XML Dump text becomes hex?

Forgive me if this has been answered in the past. I could not find it 
in the archives.

I open a vdb with VAPP and do an XML Dump. The field defined as TEXT 
named 'caption' has its data displayed in hex instead of ascii (see 
example below). Is this normal and is there a way to change the 
behavior?
