locating field duplicates

Hmm, 

Then this sounds only as bad index.
Try reindex database.

This should fix it.
Please check that AFTER reindex, if you assign wrong value you get error
code in return.

Yes, this is CORRECT.

IF a field, already has not unique values,
But you ask mark such field as unique, Valentina try build UNIQUE index,
And of course fails. Valentina is not able resolve self what values must be
deleted or changed. This should do human
