How to limit returned rows?

BTW, import is similarly slow. It took about 18 minutes to finish the import and it was 28,000 records, not 21,000 like I wrote originally. 

Also, is it necessary to have the interface block while these are running. Seems like it would be nice to be able to interact with other tables or DBs while these longer running processes are going on.
