Bill,

Please check if you are typing the computer admin password when use VServer pane in System Preferences - NOT database admin password. 
If yes, it should work. 
If not - it's behavior is like you described in your post (nothing does work).

I double checked it once more. I can Start and Stop VServer. When it's stopped I can delete logs.
