Couldn't agree more. One of the common misconceptions is that everyone has
Internet all the time. On of the 'cons' of a Forum is that you do need to
be connected to the Internet to participate. Not necessarily so with
mailing lists. I spend a lot of time in aircraft travelling from one
business project to another. Prior to boarding I attend to all the ASAP
business related emails. But once in the air, when I no longer have
Internet, I can leisurely go through all the emails that entered my Inbox
from the various mailing lists I subscribe to; and I can respond to them.
Those responses will sit patiently in my Outbox until next time I have
Internet - which will be the same time I have another bunch of ASAP
business related emails so I never seem to have the luxury of time to
browse around Forums.

Mailing Lists can be accessed by anyone so long as they have at least
limited access to the Internet, no matter how low their bandwidth - i.e.
dial-up. Forums require more bandwidth. Not everyone is on constantly
available broadband. Robert's suggested hybrid solution would ensure
maximum participation from what appears to be universally accepted as a low
traffic user community.
