Using Valentina Studio - and complaints

Strange... Is there "42" in each record, too, or just empty?

What if you try to execute the same query (as generated by VStudio) in SQL
Editor?
ALTER TABLE "table1" CHANGE COLUMN "table1Col" "table1Col" VARCHAR ( 8 );

Does that work for you?
