Importing Dates

Hi,

I am trying to import dates. They are in various formats in a text file.

01.01.2006 - Will not import - it displays <NULL>, or, if 'Nullable'  
is Off it displays 00/00/0000.
01/01/2006 - Will import and display properly.

Is there a way around this, or do I have to convert all my dates to  
"/" separators.

I have found a page for importing ODBC but can't find any info on  
importing text - any help there?
