No, if I use this

myDatabase.myReferences.CreateVarCharField("firstAuthorSortMethod", 
64, EVFlag.fNone, "authors")

I get empty rows (even though there is text in each "authors" field

and viSQl tells me

mySortMethod=authors    VarChar[0] Method
