Bug when file names have periods

How long will that take, do you think?

This is not an obscure bug, this means that many people are going to 
get errors trying to open files they have used for years, and then 
inundate me with tech support questions (it's happening already). If 
we can't have the fix soon, do you know in which fc version it broke? 
And can we get the release just prior to that?
