TIFF should also support an alpha channel and even more than 3 color
channels (i.e. CMYK for printing).
I also run the workaround using one castmember as an intermediate for
all images and getMedia/setMedia.
However, it would be really great to have a lossless image
compression getImage/setImage like PNG.
JPEG causes artefacts that are invisible for human eyes but can make
an image unuasable as soon as you use its pixels.
From my experience PNG should be much easier to handle as TIFF
because it has stronger definition standards. With TIFF there are
many "dialects".
For use with director we don't need the vector capabilities from PNG
for getImage/setImage because a Director image value can not contain
vector info.
It would be great to have support for different color depth (1 bit,
8bit grayScale/with palette, 16 bit, 24 bit, 24 bit alpha = 32 bit)

Greets Tsch.
