I've run into a fairly big problem. My company recently released an update to our software, which included the a65 version of VServer. Our initial release was back in Sept '04 and used version a63 of VServer. We thoroughly tested the new update and everything was working fine when we released it a couple weeks ago. But the last couple days we've had customers start calling in who have installed the update (OS X version) and are now experiencing problems with their databases. So my first questions is this: is there anything that might cause a conflict with the older database and VServer a65? I have had customers send me their database files, and sure enough, there are certain UPDATE queries my program runs that do not actually update the records of the database. I have checked this queries and the SQLExecute function indicates that rows were indeed affected, but not change actually occurs in the data. Another weird thing is that if I revert back to VServer a63, the same queries work fine on the same database files. It's very bizarre. So I'm wondering if something changed with a65 that made it so older databases will not work with it. If this is the case, is there anything that can be done so my customers won't have to lose all their data? Has anyone had similar problems? I can provide database files, SQL code, and further details if necessary. Well, I know and the fontmap.txt file is fine for both platforms. But I only used lingo variables. This is the first time that I have such problems and the first time that I used a MAC for generating such a DB. Temporary I solved the problem via XML dump on my MAC and LoadDump on my Windows PC, but the bad thing is now I have two different DBs with the same data because I copied the via LoadDump on a Windows PC generated DB on a MAC and then I had the same problem on my MAC?! Could it be that the xtra fileIO reading routine is different on both platforms? In my eyes this is the sticking point. If I have a bit time I will do the same importing procedure on a Windows PC and then I'll try this DB on a MAC. Did you set it to German? >I didn't specify any language because the data are multi-lingual. All >fields are >'ASCII'. That is what's causing part of the problem. In case you can't change the setting, you have to create a custom font for the text display. Your problem is that the characters are automatically converted when you load them from the db at runtime and when you then display them in a field or text member, they seem not to be correct. There is a long and tedious way to make it work the way you want, I just had to do it on a recent project, but it worked: To fix this you need to find out the charnum of the characters that are not correct and also find the charnum they should have and create a mapping for each character that is displayed incorrectly. Then you have to create your own custom font and change the ascii code for the characters in question, i.e. move them around so that they are in the position of the charnum that actually gets returned on that platform. You have to do that for each platform and in your application check which platform you're on and use the according font for that platform. In my case, I created the db on a pc but still had the same problems. I was using German as the language setting, since the base language of all texts was German but it contained lots of Namens and Quotes from countries all over Europe (France, Schweden, Denmark, Poland etc.) so there were diacritical marks from all kinds of languages. Since unfortunately UTF is not yet an option when working with Director, there was no other way I found to make it work. Maybe it'll help you solve your problem. Martin. I can't set any language because the data are multi-lingual. But I have a question: Could it be that the problem occurs with the Valentina field type 'TEXT' only? I also used this field type for the first time. In my databases I always used 'VARCHAR' for storing strings. Now I have to store strings which are larger than 64k so I took a 'TEXT' field. I've got a problem that I'm pretty sure is related to the VXCMD client, and it needs to be fixed ASAP. My program is running a simple UPDATE query: "UPDATE Students SET LoggedIn=0 WHERE LoggedIn=1". Do you see a problem with this query? I don't, but it's not working. If it only has to update one record, it does work. If it has to update multiple records, it appears to run correctly (the SQLExecute function even returns the number of rows selected), but the data in the database does *not* get changed. I have run the query through ViSQL and it works perfectly. It seems to be some weird problem between the client VXCMD and VServer. I have had other similar problems in the past, but in those cases I was able to perform the updates by creating a cursor first and then performing the necessary tasks. But that is not working in this case for some reason. Can you *please* take a look at this as soon as possible? I'm way past my deadline on this and I don't think there's a problem in my code. I forgot to write the link information between two tables within my SQL statement. I know this is wrong, but with Mac Director 10 at the moment the programme wants to get the number of records Director crashes immediately. Before that it writes out the error 616-wrong expression. This happens within the developer environment. I didn't try it out with a projector or shockwave. Example table1 - field a1,b1 table2 - field a2,b2 set query = "select a2 from table1,table2 where a1 = 'ABC'" set gCursor = new( xtra "VCursor", GetRef(gDB), query ) cnt = GetRecordCount(gCursor) ->total crash without saving anything! If I write it correctly set query = "select a2 from table1,table2 where table1.a1 = 'ABC' and table1.b1=table2.b2" it works fine. Under Windows I was returned and it didn't crash. This behaviour would also be nice with Mac, because I forgot to save my project :( Hans From deichmann at werkbank.com Fri Jan 7 14:41:57 2005 From: deichmann at werkbank.com (Sven Deichmann) Date: Fri Jan 7 07:42:22 2005 Subject: UPDATE using old value / incrementing values Message-ID: <41DE91A5.7040509@werkbank.com> Hello, I just stumbled upon a problem, I already had before. START BETA TESTING. Message-ID: Hi Director developers! We are happy introduce to you V4MD 2.0 b36 for MAC. * Please download it, * install following instructions. * download docs (they are draft yet) * run and play our examples. ** V4MD 2.0 have get SIGNIFICANT architectural changes. Now it have no 2 Xtras but 10 Xtras. ** We have implement the excellent OO design for V4MD. Yes, we have found that Macromedia Director allow this. ** Also we have implement usage of properties for Xtras. So now syntax is more simple for many things. E.g. Instead of pair methods db.SetName() + db.GetName() Now we have simply db.Name property. ** we have implement 3 ways to work with pictures: - 1.x way via cast member. - way via .Picture and variable - .Image - modern way of Director. - Now we do not depend on QT on any platform. - now we support any major bit depth of picture, 32, 24, 16, 8 - now we can store picture into JPG, TIFF, PICT, DIB - Now we can load into Picture field the file from HDD as is. ** SQL92 implemented. On the beta download page you will find link to our SQL grammar. ** Now V4MD will produce V4MD_Log file with a lots of debug info, which will simplify your development. ** And a lots of other new cool features. So We invite you for ACTIVE BETA TESTING! :-) Enjoy. P.S. If somebody cannot use MAC version and need WIN version, please let us know, we will prepare WIN archive also. -- Best regards, Ruslan Zasukhin [ I feel the need...the need for speed ] ------------------------------------------------------------- e-mail: ruslan@paradigmasoft.com web: http://www.paradigmasoft.com To subscribe to the Valentina mail list go to: http://lists.macserve.net/mailman/listinfo/valentina ------------------------------------------------------------- From sunshine at public.kherson.ua Sat Jan 8 19:21:44 2005 From: sunshine at public.kherson.ua (Ruslan Zasukhin) Date: Sat Jan 8 11:21:50 2005 Subject: UPDATE using old value / incrementing values In-Reply-To: <41DE91A5.7040509@werkbank.com> Message-ID: On 1/7/05 3:41 PM, "Sven Deichmann" wrote: > Hello, > > I just stumbled upon a problem, I already had before. > But this time it is a performance critical script and this could become > a serious problem as I don't want to select the old values before. > Is Valentina really uncapable of accessing the current value within an > UPDATE? > If I use "UPDATE TrafficSums SET BytesOut=BytesOut+777 WHERE Host LIKE > 'werkbank.com'" > BytesOut for werkbank.com will be 0 afterwards. > Why that? You have to download the Valentina xtra V4MD for Mac_carbon and copy it into the folder C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Director MX 2004\Configuration\Cross Platform Resources\Macintosh\Xtras (The folder name can differ of course) It works but nevertheless it is recommended that you run it on a MAC before you publish it! Simon, please ignore the error messages ;) . Make a Mac-projector on a PC. Director will tell you that it can't find the V4MD_carbon.Xtr, continue with generating the projector. Then you will get a file called ???.???.hqx. On a **mac** you have to decompress this file. You will get a folder named ???.??? Within this folder you create a folder called 'xtras'. Copy the Valentina Mac xtra into this folder and run the programme. It runs ;) But, you will need at least one Mac to create the archive. The crucial point is when I decompress the hqx file on a PC, create the xtras folder, and compress it with Stuffit then the execution flag of your projector is gone. Ad hoc I have no idea to solve this problem. No. The file you get from StuffItExpander IS the .data file. You can self add this extention. I see that StuffIt Expander can put resources part into .bin file. Yes you can ignore the error messages about missing xtras and unstuff your Mac projector on a Mac and manually add the xtra to the xtras folder, but it is supposed to be easier and in fact *is* easier than that. You can create a fully self contained Mac projector on a Windows machine with no need to open the .hqx file on a Mac to do anything other than run it - no adding xtras or any other nonsense. 1). Ruslan (or paradigma) need to provide split xtras. Or a developer with a Mac could do so and send them to you. There is a resource on updatestage for creating them: I don't know if this archive is self-contained or not, but the splitting *must* be done on a Mac (I don't have one available, unfortunately). Once you have obtained the split xtra (V4MD_Carbon.rsrc and V4MD_Carbon.data | V4MD_Classic.rsrc and V4MD_Classic.data - or whatever the correct names turn out to be) you need to place these into the Macintosh and Classic subfolders of the above Cross Platform Resources folder. 2). The next thing you need to do is edit your xtrainfo.txt file to tell Director the corresponding named xtra file to incorporate into the Mac projector. For example, the Windows xtra is named V4MD.x32. One of the corresponding Mac xtras is named V4MD_Carbon.xtr (I'm guessing, as again: I don't have a Mac available to verify). Director needs to know that when it comes time to bundle the Valentina xtra into the projectors, the Windows one is named "this" while the Mac one is named "that". As long as the Mac ones are placed in the correct Cross Platform Resources folder they will be found - the xtrainfo.txt file serves as a lookup list for name resolution. Look at any of the existing entries, FileIO for example: [#namePPC:"FileIO PPC Xtra", #nameW32:"FILEIO.X32"] The #namePPC entry tells Director the corresponding Mac xtra name for the Windows (#nameW32) xtra "FILEIO.X32". Does any of the above make sense to you? If not, sing out and I'll try to be clearer. Again - it *should* be possible to create a self-contained Mac projector on a Windows box, but: you need split xtras (because the Windows file system kills resource forks) AND you need to edit your xtrainfo.txt file. Also, you can't create Shockwave projectors for the Mac - the xtras *must* be bundled into the projector - no external xtras folder. Cheers, -Sean. Hi Simon, extracting the archive on a PC will remove the file and folder resources, so when copying them over to a Mac they will no longer be recognized. Macromedia created the hqx method so that the resources would be preserved when moving everything to your Mac. The intention of Dir 10 was not to be able to create Mac Projectors on a PC and distribute them (and vice versa), but to spare you from having to buy an additional Mac Dir license. You still need a Mac for the creation and more importantly testing of your application. I would not recommend distributing anything before you have tested it on the target platform. Martin. With director 10.1 (not 10.0), there are seperate publishing options to create os9 and osx projectors. I assume that the same rules apply for the xtras to each. At any rate, the most important thing for me at the moment is for my client to produce windows and mac projectors on his MAC (which will almost certainly not present any problems for creating os9 and osx projectors). I Was trying to work out how to produce the projectors on my pc because I assumed the process would be the same but in reverse (I only have access to a pc at the moment). Evidently, the process of creating win+mac projectors on a pc is NOT quite the same as producing win+mac projectors on a mac. If I understood you right, the process is a little easier on a mac, and for the moment at least, this is good enough for me. I will hopefull get chance to try all this out on a mac tommorow when I will have access to one. Thanks again for your invaluable help.
