How to put icons on other files

I've specified my program's icons (and I'm just amazed at having it appear
in the toolbar and the menu), but here's a question I have. I'm also
creating a data file (a Valentina database), and it a file type that's
unique to my program. How can I assign an icon to that file when I create
it. Also, I want to set it up so that double-clicking on that file will
launch my program. Thank you.
