Server without network connection

I am developing a client server applicaton and for development and
presentations I have the server and the client running on the same machine.

The problem is that if I am not physically connected to a network (although
I do communicate locally with the server) I can not connect to the server
(error 10065). Is this a common behavior? For me it is very bad. I can not
develop on my notebook when I am eg in the train and for presentations I
need to have 2 computers...
