I also know that Flash can work with XML.

Yes you have told this.
Point is that XML should be TRANSFER format.

Flash movie send some query in XML form to SERVER.
Server parse it and extract SQL query.
Call DBMS. Result of query (cursor) is packed back to XML and is sent to
Flash.

I know that this way is used mainly with Flash + DB area.
