[VXCMD] How do you use expressions in a SQL Statement

Sorry if this is a novice question, but how can I use, say "upper" in a
SQL statement? I've tried something like:

  put Valentina("Database_SQLSelect",dbRef,"SELECT
Upper(FileAs),FirstName,LastName from ENTITIES") into cursRef

but it keeps erroring out with ERROR 393.
