Of course, that's the most simple way and that's what most
developers do with Shockwave or Flash, use PHP or Perl scripts
to talk to a database, ideally through a generic db wrapper,
so switching to Valentina would only require to change a single
parameter in a config file from "mysql" to "valentina".

But Flash and Shockwave can both do XML parsing, so
while they can't write files to the server, they can in fact
parse XML files directly from the server or database.
This applies also to SOAP stuff, i.e. webservices which
Flash can talk to directly, without the requirement of any
server scripts.

With VPHP and open source SOAP server / client apps like
PHP NuSOAP, you could create your own Valentina-based
webservice which Flash can talk to directly. An example
project could be a topic map application (like the TM4J java app)
using a Valentina db and different front ends, in Flash,
Shockwave, Java or even HTML.

Martin.
