My previous message seems to have been lost in the list changeover, 
so I'll try again.

I know next to nothing about Perl, but I'm sure there must be a way 
to call C libraries from Perl. I'm using the C SDK with Lisp and it 
seems to work very well.

I found this link today: http://www.swig.org/. SWIG is a development 
tool that allows you to connect to C/C++ programs with a variety of 
languages including Perl, Python, Tcl/Tk, Ruby, Guile, and Scheme. On 
the home page there is a very recent download for a Mac version of 
SWIG.
