Newbie alert continued. Cursors

Ok.  SO I'm still trying to get my head arounf this thing and I'm on 
cursors now.

What I'm doing is writing a valentina API for database access and 
other for creation/changing the structure.

With cursors, the docs say you have to create one with a valid SQL query.

I'm trying to create a cursor so that I can add/change a record in a field.

Is this the way to go about it or am I a complete retard?
