You can make 

    ULONG autoincrement

* Its values are based on RecID values in fact
    i.e. It can reuse values.

* We do not see problems with such behavior.

* We know that e.g. MS SQL Server also do this, especially if it use
replication.

* so our     ULONG autoincrement  field
    do not eat disk space at all
