I have some small bugs left caused by the transition (for example in the ASCII Import routines) which i am currently fixing. So - for now: PLEASE do not use ASCII-Import!!! - The first version of the new 2.x engine Plugin is also working. You can now create Valentina 2.x databases with Valentina Studio! My biggest job for the next time is to implement all new features into this Plugin so that it can be used for every day work. Currently there is no much to see for you in this aerea - you can only create databases and tables. But most of the underlying work has been done so we will have more funcionality in this aerea in the next build. I hope that Ruslan can build a 2.x kernel with XCode also so that i can include it in the Mac build. - ODBC: I have done much work in the last two weeks to greatly improve ODBC support: Valentina Studio Admin is now able to perform the following tasks: - Connect to any ODBC datasources. vStudio can now show all defined datasources on your system. - Browse data in ODBC datasources - Execute SQL statements on ODBC datasources Additional it can help now by moving data from existing ODBC datasources to Valentina by the following tasks: - vStudio self creates a new Valentina database - vStudio now self creates ALL REQUIRED TABLES in the new database by cloning the ODBC database structure!! This is a "One click" operation. - vStudio now self do the required field mappings between the ODBC database fields and the newly created Valentina fields for preparing the import. - vStudio can now import ALL DATA FROM ALL TABLES at once. The user is guided through these steps by the "valentina Import Wizard". Please guys TEST these ODBC Import feature!!! I want to make these routines rock solid - and they are complex because i must map field types from ODBC to Valentina - so most likly we will find bugs here when testing this! Please also test with big databases and many records.... I am currently writing an "Valentina Studio ODBC Guide" which will help novice users with all these ODBC stuff. I hope to get it ready with the next build. -- Best regards, Jochen Peters PIIT GmbH -------------------------- http://www.valentina-db.de From sunshine at public.kherson.ua Thu Sep 16 08:57:47 2004 From: sunshine at public.kherson.ua (Ruslan Zasukhin) Date: Thu Sep 16 00:58:21 2004 Subject: [ANN] vStudio Admin (Win) a66 uploaded In-Reply-To: <54554.62.154.199.179.1095313202.squirrel@webmail3.server-einstellung.de> Message-ID: On 9/16/04 8:40 AM, "Jochen Peters" wrote: > Hi guys, > > i have uploaded a new vStudio build to: > http://www.valentina-db.de/en/downloads/downvstd.shtml > > This is a Win build only. Just pull it out of the Plugin's folder and you will have 2.x only! I think in vStudio 1.0 final we will not have 1.x Plugin. Here are some notes: 1) In the menu system, FILE->Open Recent Datasource displays recently opened files correctly, but like this: BOLTables:0 Comp:0 My question is, does the ":0" have meaning? 2) The ODBC connection features, in both the "Connect to ODBC data source" dlog and Import Wizard are VERY convenient. Thank you! 3) In the Field Mapping screen, the Import Wizard dialog says "Please define the relationship between fields by drag drop." I assume your code says "drag & drop", but the "&" displays as an extra SPACE char. 4) I don't know how to make the drag and drop to work in the field mapping panel. I was able to do field mappings only individually, with "Create single table...". 5) The "Importing records" prgress dialog, showing the elapsed and estimated times, is great. 6) I imported from an Access database (70.2 MB, 2 tables: 58,913 records). Results are: * Table1 (small, 5 flds) had no records imported * Table2 (large, 10 flds) had all records imported, but with incorrect data * Table2: 7 integer fields all imported only '0' * Table2: 2 VarChar fields imported OK * Table2: 1 "Memo" (LONGCHAR) field truncated large all text to 10 chars 7) The wizard asks "Valentina Studio can create all tables in your new database automatically. Start table creation now?". If I answer YES, some tables are created, but most field mappings fail. From that point, I cannot proceed with the import. 8) For MS Access files, the tables named "MSysAccessStorage", "MSysAccessObjects", "MSysAccessXML", "MSysACEs", "MSysObjects", "MSysQueries", and "MSysRelationships" are invisible by default, internally stored data, and probably do not need to be duplicated in the Valentina database. Most of their field mappings fail. 9) At db creation time, I choose "Mode 4", but no .blb file is created at that time. If I connect to an ODBC source that has MEMO text fields, and answer YES to automatically create tables (see #7 above), the .blb file is created. But since I can't proceed with the import, I instead choose "Create single table" multiple times, to create only the tables I want (skipping MS Access internal tables, see #8 above), the .blb file is never created. 10) While I was using the Import Wizard, the 10-minute time limit expired. V-S quit, but the Import Wizard remained! I think some of these problems may disappear if you skip creation of Access' invisible tables (see #8). That way, I'd be able to answer YES to automatically create tables, the .blb is created, and field mappings would succeed. This is what I tried many times, but couldn't see any change. I later realized those mappings were already made in the Access MSys_ tables. But in my tables, dragging & dropping as you describe had no effect, becuase no field names are listed. > What field types? TABLE: Categories FIELD____TYPE ID Long int Sort Long int Parent Long int Level Long int Name str, 50 TABLE: Comp FIELD____TYPE ID Long int Category Long int Book Long int Chap Long int VLo Long int VHi Long int Seq Long int TreeTtl str, 255 Title str, 255 Text Memo > Hhmm - not clear. So - what tables are NOT created? Sorry, I misspoke. All tables are created, but only MSysAccessObjects, and some fields from MSysAccessXML, were mapped. These are the first two tables listed in the popup menu. In MSysAccessXML, the field "ObjectGuid" of type GUID was not mapped. After this field is skipped, no other fields are mapped. Perhaps there's a bug in mapping field type GUID? If you skip creating the MSys_ tables, this problem may go away. Because when I create my 2 tables (Categories & Comp) individually, all fields are mapped correctly. > Why can't you proceed? It is not rquired that all > tables are mapped... After the automatic table creation, my 2 tables are shown with no fields (empty right-side columns). At this point, dragging and dropping does nothing. Never had any other problem like this related to stuffit. I did some further investigation. I ran the app in GDB and this is what I got. (gdb) run Starting program: /Users/kevin/Desktop/Valentina Studio.app/Contents/MacOS/Valentina Studio tcsh: /Users/kevin/Desktop/Valentina Studio.app/Contents/MacOS/Valentina Studio: Permission denied. Looking at the permissions on Valentina Studio.app/Contents/MacOS/Valentina Studio I see that I have read/write but no execute. So I did a chmod u+x and it works now. Maybe the distribution format should change to a .dmg on Mac, or a .dmg.sit. My stuffit is up to date (latest version of 8), and this problem I think has been mentioned before, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. So I did a chmod u+x and it works now. Kevin, And I believe that this problem is caused by Stuffit. I have THE SAME problem few months ago. Solution was update of Stuffit. In update in release notes was mentioned ONLY THIS bug fix (wrong permission flags for OS X executables) > Maybe the distribution format should change to a .dmg on Mac, or a > .dmg.sit. With name or IP adress ? Yes, here is the crash log. I specified the server address as Server.local. I just tried it again with the ip number, and it crashed again in the same place. It may have something to do with the fact that I have tried to unregister some DBs, and they haven't unregistered. I have some with no database files available. Maybe that is the reason. VStudio doesn't account for a case where there may be a problem actually seeing the database when the server has it listed as available.
