From davidn at accessitsoftware.com Tue May 4 09:27:56 2004 From: davidn at accessitsoftware.com (David Nock) Date: Mon May 3 16:28:03 2004 Subject: [Valentina-studio] Problems connecting to server with vStudio a49 Message-ID: Hi I've seen someone else asking the same question but I have tried what was suggested but I am unable to connect to a server running on the same machine. I've specified all parameters in the connection dialog (192.168.0.210,sa,sa,15432) but as soon as I click the connect button, it just hangs. I then tried vStudio a41 and that connects fine. This is running on a Win2k machine. I have server a62 (I think) installed but I'm unable to confirm this as none of the version numbers within Valentina match. I have downloaded the a62 version of the server but running it in a command prompt it shows as a59 and the server.dll shows as version a60. Can anyone help? Idea is that people without knowledge of SQL can make queries per drag & drop and some mouse clicks. Professional can use the SQL Editor which allows ALL kind of SQL queries/strings - but of course he must enter it "by hand". I would love to see this feature! It's quite simple: When MSAccess opens an .mdb file, it creates a temp file of the same name, with an .ldb extension. When the file is closed, MSAccess deletes the .ldb file. When V-S (or ODBC_V) opens an MSAccess data source, the .ldb file is created just the same. HOWEVER, when V-S or ODBC_V close the data source, they DO NOT delete the .ldb file. So after using V-S or ODBC_V, I have .ldb files sprinkled around my drives, which I must delete manually. Shouldn't this file-deletion be quick to implement? What do you think? Yes, your suggestion of the ODBC driver makes more sense than MSAccess deleting the file, since when V-S or ODBC_V open the datasource, MSAccess is not open. Because this happens also in the ODBC-utility i think it is a driver problem... Rob - problem is that Valentina Studio doesn't know anything special about the ODBC datasource. Of course it would be possible to analyse the kind od ODBC datasource - and - if is is Access try to determine the path and delete this file - but this would be very BAD approach!!! This must be done by the driver itself! I will look again at the documentation of ODBC - but i am quite sure that there is nothing what i can do here... -- Best regards, Jochen Peters PIIT GmbH ------------------------------------ http://www.valentina-db.de From rwingate at visual-book.com Wed May 5 13:15:29 2004 From: rwingate at visual-book.com (Rob Wingate) Date: Wed May 5 12:15:45 2004 Subject: V-S Feature Request References: <84B67947-9EB6-11D8-A614-003065488610@valentina-db.de> Message-ID: <006001c432c4$93ded690$4c00a8c0@vbp.visualbook.com> Hopefully the ODBC documentation will yield clues. > i am quite sure that there is nothing what i can do How about, after closing a data source, simply test for the .ldb file's existence & delete it if it's there? It is not so easy, Rob. As i have told in my previous mail: For vStudio all ODBC-datasources are the same! vStudio do not have ANY code special to Access. So - this must be added. At first vStudio must determine the kind of ODBC datasource - this is possible, of course - then it must determine the Path to the database file - i am not sure how i can get this - because this is all handled by the driver! Of course there is a driver API - well - but this will mean more than 3 -5 lines of Code :-) ... Anyway - i will look into this... -- Best regards, Jochen Peters PIIT GmbH ------------------------------------ http://www.valentina-db.de From rwingate at visual-book.com Fri May 7 17:20:12 2004 From: rwingate at visual-book.com (Rob Wingate) Date: Fri May 7 16:20:37 2004 Subject: V-S Import Wizard References: <84B67947-9EB6-11D8-A614-003065488610@valentina-db.de><006001c432c4$93ded690$4c00a8c0@vbp.visualbook.com> <1A2E68DB-9EB9-11D8-A614-003065488610@valentina-db.de> Message-ID: <004201c43479$1af57e80$4c00a8c0@vbp.visualbook.com> Jochen, Does the 'Define Filter...' button in the Import Wizard work yet? This build contains a completly rewritten Navigator with improved GUI. Please have a look on it and let me know if you like it this way. Please note that this build IS NOT BUG FREE! I only want to let you look on what is going on in the moment. This build contains several changes and improvements: - Limited (V1) Export. Please note that we will get a much more sophisticated export as soon as the 2.x engine will be integrated. - The preferred navigator view is now stored as preference - On Windows the default view is "List View" - on mac the default view is "Column view" - The sizes of the navigator columns are stored in the preferences - the size of the navigator window itself is also stored. I will upload the next a51 build during this weekend. I will implement a method where sizes will be persistent - even if you close the db or close Studio. I am working on a good solution here... I have 3 options here: 1) Storing this stuff in the db itself - as we have discussed some time ago - or 2) Storing it in the PrefsDB 3) Create a special db (with different extension) in the same folder of the db to store all of this stuff. 1) I do not very like to CHANGE the database of the user by putting my own stuff into it - it will grow - maybe corrupt or other bad things can happen even if i use system tables or user files in the db. 2) Obvious not a good solution... 3) I tend to do it like this. This is very flexible way. I can store as many stuff as i want - because it is my own database. i do not touch the user db in any way. If the user want get rid of any Studio stuff he can simply delete this file - what you think? > > -- Best regards, Jochen Peters PIIT GmbH ------------------------------------ http://www.valentina-db.de From sunshine at public.kherson.ua Sun May 30 19:36:02 2004 From: sunshine at public.kherson.ua (Ruslan Zasukhin) Date: Sun May 30 11:36:11 2004 Subject: a55 // size of methods In-Reply-To: Message-ID: On 5/30/04 6:49 PM, "Jochen Peters" wrote: > I have 3 options here: > 1) Storing this stuff in the db itself - as we have discussed some time > ago - or > 2) Storing it in the PrefsDB NOT in prefs! You need move buttons SAVE/Cancel, Show methods size of row and rest into TOP bar. Also once again take a look on VAPP's floating window With controls Next/prev first/last position delete sorting // menu of predfined sorts Look how many useful things. Again, this floating window play very import role in VAPP it provide standard/default interface/GUI for e.g. First/Last/Prev/Next buttons. Compare to Filemker, 4D. They also provide such default buttons. FileMaker do this in more consistent way IMHO. It show this as nice control in the book style of left side. 4D generate in each layout default set of buttons, Which you customize later. You do not have this now. As I see. Well, current position is visible on left of each row. But how I can JUMP to Nth record? Buttons prev/next we need when we are in the ONE RECORD EDIT mode. Actually you do not have now such mode. In VAPP I did have it. Because in the LINE mode, it is good to see numbers and small strings, But it is not good to see MANY LINES Text fields, or Pictures. And we going to have Custom layouts, so you will need in any case SINGLE RECORD layout support. Again, look at 4D, they explicitly define: single record layout and multi-record layout. Hi Jochen, And let me explain one more reason, why in VAPP I have made it as floating window but not in the toolbar of window. Reason is -- browser with 2 tables. When focus is on the top table, all buttons work for it. When focus is on bottom table, they works for bottom table. If put buttons into top of window into toolbar, It looks not so obvious that they will work in the same way for bottom table. This is why I have decide in VAPP move them into separate window. --------------- Another reason, We can have several opened browsers, but only one get focus. So instead of eating monitor space, showing in EACH browser the same set of buttons, I have move them into floating window so they are only once on display. I do not say that floating window is the best solution. But it is not worse. Especially if floating window is smart, Like in Adobe apps. -- Best regards, Ruslan Zasukhin [ I feel the need...the need for speed ] ------------------------------------------------------------- e-mail: ruslan@paradigmasoft.com web: http://www.paradigmasoft.com To subscribe to the Valentina mail list go to: http://lists.macserve.net/mailman/listinfo/valentina ------------------------------------------------------------- From j.peters at valentina-db.de Mon May 31 20:50:23 2004 From: j.peters at valentina-db.de (Jochen Peters) Date: Mon May 31 13:50:31 2004 Subject: [ANN] Build 1.0a56 uploaded (Mac+Win) In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <5F548640-B333-11D8-8F60-000A959F6B0C@valentina-db.de> Hi Ruslan, > If you will start think about second browser at bottom, you will see > that > your controls at bottom are located not good. > > You need move > buttons SAVE/Cancel, > Show methods > size of row > and rest > > into TOP bar. > > Also once again take a look on VAPP's floating window > With controls > > Next/prev > first/last > position > delete > sorting // menu of predfined sorts > > Look how many useful things. Yes - i agree. The reason for having all these controls at the bottom is as follows: I have made class "vsResultSetGrid" - which can display result sets from any datasource and can also manipulate the data. I use this single class in: - Data Browser - SQL Editor - SQL Builder You see? For this it was much easier to implement it with controls at the bottom because now i can place it on any child window... Ok - but this is technical reason - You are right that this must be changed when we have this second browser - i need think about how to do it. > > > Again, this floating window play very import role in VAPP > it provide standard/default interface/GUI > for e.g. First/Last/Prev/Next buttons. > > Compare to Filemker, 4D. > They also provide such default buttons. > FileMaker do this in more consistent way IMHO. > It show this as nice control in the book style of left side. > 4D generate in each layout default set of buttons, > Which you customize later. > > You do not have this now.
