Now it looks like left() is broken entirely.

select * from thereferences where (left([allFields], 4) = 'abel')

finds nothing (in the database I send you), where

select * from thereferences where (left([allFields], 4) = 'abelard')

(which is a whole name) finds 3.

I can reproduce the bug with a fresh db, too.
