Right now we have only one such dependency yet. * as only we will break this one, we can easy ship C++ SDK for Windows and Visual C++ * for xCode it will take little longer time. We still need yet workout where to put VComponents folder. It looks we will need do some magic with Executable_path...so this can take several days. It will be great if you will be on beta list, because I will discuss this xCode issues there. * We are NOT going ship CodeWarrior version, although this is also quite simple, because CodeWarrior environment this is where I work each day yet. -- Best regards, Ruslan Zasukhin VP Engineering and New Technology Paradigma Software, Inc Valentina - Joining Worlds of Information http://www.paradigmasoft.com [I feel the need: the need for speed] From j.peters at valentina-db.de Wed Oct 5 14:26:01 2005 From: j.peters at valentina-db.de (Jochen Peters) Date: Wed Oct 5 07:26:31 2005 Subject: VStudio crash In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <51890.62.154.199.179.1128515161.squirrel@webmail3.server-einstellung.de> Hi Charles, what version of Mac OS X are you using? -- Best regards, Jochen Peters PIIT GmbH -------------------------- http://www.valentina-db.de From j.peters at valentina-db.de Wed Oct 5 14:27:47 2005 From: j.peters at valentina-db.de (Jochen Peters) Date: Wed Oct 5 07:27:51 2005 Subject: Val Studio In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <53530.62.154.199.179.1128515267.squirrel@webmail3.server-einstellung.de> Hi Ron, > > I just downloaded the latest versions of val studio for windows and for > mac and can't get either one to start. Okay listen for answer. * we have IDENTITY field, analog of auto_increment. BUT if you expect that it always will give you growing sequence, you are wrong. In fact our IDENTITY use RecID values. ** why we have made this? BECAUSE it is silly idea to have growing unique numbers. sooner or later they will be finished. Is this not possible? Ron, Revolution do not support yet unicode as good as required. As far as I know, Revolution team going improve this soon. Again, remember that UTF16 = UTF8 = unicode Problem is that to Valentina you need send strings as UTF8. I hope Rev can get this fixed and working properly in the near future. Their implementation of unicode does not feel 'natural' at all. This is the last 2.0 beta version. We are working now on the first 2.1 release version. This release contains the latest kernel and client fixes along with several improvements of the overall stability. We have improved the DataBrowser on Mac and Windows - for example you can now set a font for displaying of data in the preference dialog. Import and Export is now greatly improved for V2 databases. You can still do a simple export for V1 databases - imports into V1 databases are not supported anymore. We have also implemented Dump for V2 databases - it is still possible to do a limited dump of V1 databases. Please note that all new features will be for V2 databases in future - so please consider switching to V2 if possible. Did the name change somewhere in development or am I confusing two things? > 3. But database could be saved as UTF16 encoding (implemented) so UTF8 > one (not implemented yet). I didn't understand no. 3. I know that both REV and VAL use UTF16 internally. I think I hear you saying that in order to talk to each other through the xcmd wrapper, the data must be converted to UTF8. This is done at creation of the db by put VDatabase_Constructor() into mDBRef get VDatabase_Create( mDBRef, path, "kDscDatBlbInd", 32 * 1024, "kOsDefault" ) get VDatabase_IOEncoding( mDBRef, "UTF-8" ) correct? So at this point, we V4REV users cannot take advantage of utf16 encoding of V4REV. All our db's must be encoded in utf8 until Rev changes the wrapper of xcmds to allow in/output of utf16? This is 2 different things. * Storage encoding -- this is how we store strings on disk. For now work only UTF16 encoding. Best for Japan btw. We must yet todo UTF8 storage encoding. * IO Encoding this is encoding of string which you assign to some Field Value. fldName = "Ron" // can be UTF16 fldName = "Ron" // can be UTF8 or any other encoding of the world Engine work in UTF16, so if you give something else it must convert that string. But how Engine know that? Answer is: you inform about this using db.IOEncoding( "UTF8" ) -- I promise give you UTF8 strings. >> 3. But database could be saved as UTF16 encoding (implemented) so UTF8 >> one (not implemented yet). > > I didn't understand no. 3. > > I know that both REV and VAL use UTF16 internally. yes > I think I hear you saying that in order to talk to each other through > the xcmd wrapper, the data must be converted to UTF8. Yes, because external use old Rev SDK which do not support UTF16 and other features yet > This is done at creation of the db by > > put VDatabase_Constructor() into mDBRef > get VDatabase_Create( mDBRef, path, "kDscDatBlbInd", 32 * 1024, > "kOsDefault" ) > get VDatabase_IOEncoding( mDBRef, "UTF-8" ) > > correct? This only informs database that you will get/set strings in UTF8. Now you yet should care that you really give to engine string in UTF8. > So at this point, we V4REV users cannot take advantage of utf16 > encoding of V4REV. Unfortunately yes. > All our db's must be encoded in utf8 until Rev > changes the wrapper of xcmds to allow in/output of utf16? Right. Note, Database in disk will be in UTF16. Its your code will have this UTF8 conversion. So I recommend put this into separate method, So when REV will be improved you can "correct" your code by one function modification. -- Best regards, Ruslan Zasukhin VP Engineering and New Technology Paradigma Software, Inc Valentina - Joining Worlds of Information http://www.paradigmasoft.com [I feel the need: the need for speed] From sunshine at public.kherson.ua Tue Oct 25 16:41:51 2005 From: sunshine at public.kherson.ua (Ruslan Zasukhin) Date: Tue Oct 25 08:42:04 2005 Subject: next V4RB2-Version In-Reply-To: Message-ID: On 10/25/05 3:48 PM, "Claudius Sailer" wrote: > Hello, > > when will we see next V4RB2-Version which fixes > > #1088 and > #641 > > it would be nice to know because I want to make after a long long > time a new Beta-Version for my customers and after a Beta-Phase a new > final version. Hi Jon, Just we consider this as MINOR feature. Agree, that the whole world use now MS Word 2002, which uses UTF16 for documents, and nobody ask MS to store them in UTF8. Right? Yes we still plan implement this. But new products and bugs are higher priority. Also problem is that as I have told, this is not 5 minutes and not even one day of development feature. Comparing EMPTY dbs, or dbs with small number of records, yes, Valentina looks big. But most space is just empty and reserved. But if db have a lots of records, then this sounds strange Jon. I have see that Valentina 1.x was ALWAYS less that any other db. If to assume that UTF16 increase size in 2 times (and this is not very correct, because numbers still use the same size as 1.x) then we should get e.g. 1.3 - 1.8 times bigger. But not 4 times. Something wrong in this claim. 2 times -- well almost can be true 4 times -- exactly no. Another example, I have compare with SqlLite 2.x, then Valentina UTF16 was smaller than SQlLite with its UTF8. SqlLite 3 use more compact format and was little less than Valentina UTF16. -- Best regards, Ruslan Zasukhin VP Engineering and New Technology Paradigma Software, Inc Valentina - Joining Worlds of Information http://www.paradigmasoft.com [I feel the need: the need for speed] From jda at his.com Sun Oct 30 04:43:36 2005 From: jda at his.com (jda) Date: Sun Oct 30 03:43:52 2005 Subject: V2 Updates (was [ANN] Valentina for PHP MacOS X 2.1 b1) In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: > > No. They said that the db sizes are 2-4 times larger than my main >> competitor... > >What use competitor? 4D?
